Will Kevin Durant Leave OKC?
After a riveting Western Conference Finals, the Golden State Warriors become only the 10th team in National Basketball Association (NBA) history to overcome a 3-1 deficit to advance to the next round. Many are now wondering if the Thunder can retain their beloved superstar forward, Kevin Durant, after the loss for a chance at the title to the Warriors. Based on the financial aspect the answer should be a definitive yes.
A max contract with the Thunder would pay Durant $148.8 million over five years while he could sign a max contract worth $110.5 million over four years with another team. However, if he signs a one-year $25.8 million contract with Oklahoma City, he could potentially sign a maximum deal in 2017 worth $205.7 million over five years. Now what really sounds realistic here? Passing up $205 million to go to another team in hopes of chasing a title or taking the short-term deal now to reap the benefits of doing so in the long term, while staying on a roster that could compete for a championship for years to come? However, coming back to a team who just blew a 3-1 series lead against the best team in the NBA could be difficult for a phenomenal player who has never won a championship.
With Durant’s endorsement deals he may not care as much about potential salary earnings in the NBA and make the decision to pass up some money to chase a ring. Now, with the Golden State Warriors putting a beat-down on the Cleveland Cavaliers in the first two games of the NBA Finals with Durant sitting and watching it like the rest of America, he could see Golden State as an attractive destination. The Warriors look like they will roll to a second championship in as many years. What NBA superstar wouldn’t like to team up with back-to-back NBA MVP, Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green after winning what could be back-to-back championships and posting a 73-9 record in the regular season, the best record in NBA history?
Many NBA teams will likely get the chance to plead their case to bring Durant to their city. It will be interesting to see where this superstar goes. Will he begin a new chapter in the chase for his first title? Or will he continue to build upon the legacy he has built in Oklahoma City? After the NBA Finals, this is the question many fans will be thinking about.
