Spurs to Suffer a Great Loss?
Last week, the Oklahoma City Thunder knocked out the San Antonio Spurs from the National Basketball (NBA) Western Conference semifinals for the 2016 NBA playoffs. The Thunder will now play the reigning NBA champs, the Golden State Warriors who are lead by consecutive MVP winner, Stephen Curry. Although this is big news, what could be bigger is the fact that the perennial NBA playoff powerhouse, the San Antonio Spurs, may be saying farewell to one of the NBA’s all-time greats, Tim Duncan, and possibly more.
Tim Duncan is a name synonymous with success in the NBA. He has played his best when it has mattered most during the playoffs but he has been overshadowed by others. A quiet and humble man, he relishes the reserved and disciplined mantra that has been instilled by NBA coaching great, Greg Popovich. Duncan’s playoff statistics are eye-popping to say the least. He is second in most playoff wins ever only behind the Los Angeles Laker great, Derek Fisher. He surpasses names like Robert Horry, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and Scottie Pippen on that prestigious list. Duncan ranks first all time in playoff minutes with a staggering 9,370 and double doubles with 164. He is also first on the list of playoff blocks with 568, Los Angeles Laker legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in second with 476. Tim Duncan has won five NBA titles which is as many as NBA superstars Lebron James and Larry Bird have combined. The chances of Duncan retiring are high yet nothing is set in stone. When he does decide to retire whether that be this off-season or another, he will be the only player in the top three of post season blocks, rebounds and minutes. While the Spurs have talent from many others aside from Tim Duncan, if he decides to retire this year he will certainly go down in the history books as one of the best all-time NBA greats.
