Snyder Wins Gold
A typical 20-year-old has many things to worry about in a normal day: what to eat for breakfast, catching the newest mixtape, going to work just to make enough money for the weekends, or how many games of NBA 2K they can play on Xbox. For 20-year-old American Olympic wrestler Kyle Snyder, those things are likely low on his to-do list. This year he has been focused on the Rio Olympic Games and representing his country in the 97kg freestyle weight class. As a high school wrestler he won 3 state championships, boasting a 179-0 record. Following high school, he has been a top collegiate wrestler at the Ohio State University, winning the 2016 National Championship, which didn’t come even a full year after becoming the youngest American to win a world title at 19 years old. Fast forward to this past Sunday, where Snyder looked to add a gold medal to his trophy case. Snyder competed well throughout the day winning his first three matches 3-1, 3-0 and 3-1 respectively, which brought him to the gold medal match against Azerbaijan’s Khetag Gazyumov. With a 2-1 decision over Gazyumov and an impressive match where his physical and mental strength were tested, he was able to hold off a last offensive attack by Gazyumov and added the gold medal to his resume while becoming the youngest to ever do it at age 20.
The impressive young man has been active during his recent years residing in Ohio. Along with training with Dustin Myers, the co-owner of Old School Gym with Cory Gregory, he has also been very active in volunteering his time to others. A few months back we had the unique opportunity to interview Kyle and he gave us an inside look into the mindset of a student-athlete, who at such a young age has ascended to the pinnacle of his sport.
