Rousey Loses to Nunes in UFC Comeback
Ronda Rousey’s highly anticipated return to the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) ended in brutal fashion for the once women’s bantamweight champion. Amanda Nunes defended her title against Rousey with a technical knockout (TKO) in 48 seconds at UFC 207 in Las Vegas. Nunes came out with the aggression fans were used to seeing with Rousey, and was able to land a barrage of punches at will until referee Herb Dean stopped the bout.
Just 13 months ago Ronda Rousey was arguably the most popular UFC fighter along with Conor McGregor, and of the most recognizable athletes in the world. That was before Holly Holm shocked the world with a stoppage by head kick in one of the biggest upsets in mixed martial arts (MMA) history. Now, after two straight losses, it is unclear if Rousey will ever fight again. What is clear is that she will be forever known as a pioneer in women’s MMA and the person to bring women’s fighting to the UFC.
If this was Rousey’s last fight, it will be interesting to see the effect it has on the popularity of women’s fighting as the overall popularity of the UFC continues to rise.
