RIP "The King" - Arnold Palmer
On Sunday evening, golfing icon Arnold Palmer passed away in Pittsburgh while awaiting cardiac surgery. Palmer’s celebrity status transcended the sport of golf, and his tragic passing was felt worldwide. Known as “The King”, his professional sporting career lasted over 50 years where he won 90 tournaments including seven major championships. Among his many golf awards, he also received the Presidential Medal of Freedom and Congressional Gold Medal. Palmer is considered the first golfer to draw attention from the mainstream world of sports, which enabled him to become the first golfer to make a million dollars.
Off of the fairway, Palmer will be remembered for much more than his golf swing. His legacy includes a popular beverage sold in every gas station in America called an “Arnold Palmer” - half lemonade, half iced tea. As simple as this drink may be, it will ensure that his legacy stays alive through the youth of America. “The King” also had an eye for fashion and is considered to be one of the “75 best-dressed men of all time” according to Esquire magazine.
Former president George Bush, golfing legend Tiger Woods, and Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump all took to social media to share their sorrow on the passing of Palmer. As the world mourns the loss of “The King”, his legendary golfing ability and charismatic personality will enshrine him in our hearts and minds for generations to come.
