NFL to Stream on Twitter
National Football League (NFL) Commissioner, Roger Goodell, announced Tuesday morning that the bid for digital media streaming rights to the Thursday Night Football games has come to an end. The bid was said to have been offered to a major host of companies and services including Facebook, Amazon, and Verizon. However, none of these companies were the one to finalize the deal. Twitter, above them all, landed the rights to stream the games throughout the 2016 season on their social media platform.
Commissioner Goodell stated that Twitter made sense to partner with seeing as, “There is a massive amount of NFL-related conversation happening on Twitter during our games, and tapping into that audience will ensure Thursday Night Football is seen on an unprecedented number of platforms… This agreement also provides additional reach for those brands advertising with our broadcast partners.”
On what is being labeled as “Twitter Thursday Nights”, fans will now have the ability to experience both the game and their Twitter feed simultaneously on one screen. With Twitter not currently at the peak of popularity among its other social media competitors, Facebook and Instagram, at this time, this is a huge win for them. Twitter is becoming the biggest live media platform on the Internet, in combination with their recently launched live streaming app, Periscope. The winners in this deal are not solely the NFL and Twitter, however.
