Henrik Stenson Wins the Open Championship
Henrik Stenson was missing something from his decorated golfing career: a win at one of golf’s four major championships. Stenson has been known for his spectacular ball striking, but it his often criticized putting game has let him down in major championship play to this point. On Sunday at Royal Troon Golf Club, host of the 2016 Open Championship, he silenced all the critics and won his first major championship with a historic 20-under par total.
Five-time major championship winner Phil Mickelson lead after the first two rounds, and by the time Sunday rolled around, it was Mickelson and Stenson who had separated themselves from the field. None of the other top players in the world, including red hot Dustin Johnson, could catch up to the pair. Both players battled each other shot-for-shot on one of the most exciting final round duels golf has seen in long time. Phil Mickelson fired a 6-under par 65, but Henrik Stenson was nearly flawless and tied the lowest single-round score ever at a major championship with an 8-under 63 to win by three strokes.
Different golfers have now won the past four major championships. Even with dominating stretches of golf from the likes of Dustin Johnson, Jason Day and others, in any given tournament new players can break through and win. The final major of the year, the Professional Golfer’s Association (PGA) Championship, is hosted at Baltusrol Golf Club in Springfield, New Jersey. Sergio Garcia, Lee Westwood, and Ricky Fowler, among many other talented players, will all be looking to claim their first major championship win.
