Cormier vs. Jones 2 to Headline UFC 200
The popular ABC broadcast, Good Morning America, were the ones to receive the breaking news Wednesday morning as a part of the “UFC Takeover” media day they were hosting. The official headline of UFC 200 will no longer be Conor McGregor vs. Nate Diaz, but now, a long awaited rematch between Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier. In lieu of a final decision on the premiere fight for the UFC’s most anticipated and biggest event to date after the controversy surrounding the original fight of McGregor vs. Diaz, we finally have an answer.
The light heavyweight title was stripped from Jones only three months after defeating Cormier last in January of 2015, due to an arrest. In the meantime, Cormier claimed the vacant belt by defeating Anthony Johnson at UFC 187. What Jones feels he should have never lost in the first place, is what he is seeking to regain in the rematch against Cormier.
After Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) President Dana White made the statement on Good Morning America, where millions of households tune-in every morning, social media took off. Less than an hour after a post by the UFC on Instagram regarding the fight, it had nearly 34,000 likes and almost 3,000 comments. Similarly, within 30 minutes of a Jon Jones posting, 16,000 likes were attracted, while Daniel Cormier’s post about the rematch drew 4,500 likes and close to 600 comments.
The platform on which the UFC decided to make this huge announcement was a smart marketing tactic. Knowing they would have the attention of millions of people, they created a stage to get their brand out to the largest crowd possible, something Activ8 Media excels in!
