The annual Boston Marathon is no longer just a race. It has come to stands for something much greater: freedom and overcoming challenges and adversity. The runners of this race must be fearless, strong, and fast, with a relentless attitude toward achieving their goals. No hill, mile, competitor, or even tragedy can get in their way.
On April 15th, 2013 a terrorist attack struck the city during the marathon. Two bombs exploded near the finish line and directly following the bombings there were related shootings. The attack caused three civilians to lose their life and left over two hundred people injured. Thankfully, the FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation) was able to identify the suspects and has caught them. The city of Boston however, was left in pieces, yet in the midst of such a disaster, the city, along with the rest of nation, came together to overcome and ever since has been “Boston Strong”.
On Monday April 18th, 2016 the Boston Marathon will continue the annual tradition kicking off around 9AM. With the recent bombing of Brussels, killing 32 people, flashbacks of the 2013 here in the United States are definitely prominent. Boston promises to have increased security making sure everyone is safe throughout the day. The Boston Patch reported that, “more than 50 organizations are working to keep people safe during the 2016 Boston Marathon, on Boylston Street and beyond”. With all the changes in security taking place however, safety officials will be sure not to distract the runners and that spectators will not be noticing a major difference in enjoying the event from previous years. This will keep everyone at ease and allow the runners to focus on conquering the 26.2 grueling miles.
Throughout the race, the runners and audience can expect to be greeted my familiar brand names in the fitness industry such as Gatorade and Clif. With Gatorade and Clif among the top sponsors of the event, they will fuel the runners with some of their best products at various hydration stations along the course. The Boston Athletic Association states, “Since 1986, the Boston Athletic Association has used sponsorships to help keep the Boston Marathon the most revered and respected race in the world”. This stresses how important sponsors are to this race and how huge it is for a company to show their support in an event with a mass participation. With over 30,000 runners participating and being offered samples of sponsored products to help them get through the race, these companies are building themselves a loyal client base.
