A New Generation for Instagram
Earlier this month, some harsh hashtags aimed at social media powerhouse, Instagram, have been in circle after the company revealed they are going to be implementing an algorithm to their application based on the principle of "[showing] the moments we believe you care about the most". This means the way Instagram posts work now will be changed from chronological order to an order along the lines of "the likelihood you'll be interested in the content, your relationship with the person posting, and the timeliness of the post". There was, and still is an outcry, about the change on the social media platforms, the hashtags #RIPInstagram, #boycottinstagram, and #keepinstagramchronological being thrown around by many upset users.
The old saying, “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it,” comes to mind about the issue, but maybe the change won’t be as bad as people think. What Instagram is aiming to do with the updated algorithm, is prioritize what the user wants to see, and from that view, it is definitely not the death of Instagram. They made that a point by introducing the new 60-second video feature.
According to Instagram, in the last six months, the time people spent watching videos on the app increased by 40 percent. The app started as a simple, picture-sharing app, eventually becoming committed to video content. By allowing increased flexibility to tell a story with up to a minute, this extends that commitment.
Longer videos mean more diverse stories from accounts you follow. Instagram began by allowing their advertisers the minute-long privilege and two months later, the opportunity has now rolled out to its regular users. This will allow other businesses and entrepreneurs a bigger opportunity to feature free content to their followers and celebrities will be able to hold, if not increase, their fan base by giving heavier looks into their lives. Instagram helped the increase in video views along by including a public view counter. Along with extending video options, Instagram is making itself more useful presenting users with the ability to create videos in multiple clips straight from the camera roll (for iOS devices). This should have a major impact on other applications that were used to do this for Instagram, previously. The whole Instagram update goes to show the current trend in what people want, as we can see from recent apps like Periscope or Facebook’s live video feeds as well, people want more video content in their social media lives.
