Vegas in the Cards for the Raiders?

Vegas in the Cards for the Raiders?

Nicholas Tice / Contributor

For the past decade the Oakland Raiders have been trying to rebuild their status as a perennial power in the National Football League (NFL). There was a time when the black and silver uniform of the Raiders struck fear in their opponents, but the glory days have long passed and the organization’s brand is weaker than ever.

In an attempt to reenergize their brand, Raider’s owner Mark Davis made a 500 million dollar proposal to the Southern Nevada Tourism Infrastructure Committee earlier this week. The owner hopes to negotiate the relocation of the Oakland Raiders from their current home in Alameda, California to a new 65,000 seat indoor stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada. With only two years remaining in the Raiders lease at the O.co (Oakland) Coliseum, Davis hopes to get a deal going to for the newly proposed Las Vegas stadium to be built as soon as possible. The Raiders also have the support of soccer star, David Beckham, who attended the committee meeting and remarked that, “To bring a great organization like the Raiders to Las Vegas is amazing”.

If the Raiders are able to strike a deal to relocate to Vegas, the possibilities for the organization and the NFL are limitless. The NFL has never had a team located in Las Vegas even though the city is considered the entertainment capital of the world. Vegas has long been the site of the highest grossing sporting events on Earth and the addition of an NFL team would prove to be prosperous for both the city, the team, and the league.

A move to Las Vegas will certainly bring in more revenue to the Raiders’ organization, but more importantly it will help the struggling franchise build a new brand. By becoming synonymous with “Sin City”, the Raiders have the potential to reclaim the hard-nosed image they had during the 1980’s when they were victorious for two Super Bowls. Spreading brand awareness allows sports organizations to build a loyal fan base that continues to purchase tickets, merchandise, and memorabilia to keep the team on top. Activ8 Media applies these same principles to our business plans, as a loyal customer is the best strategy to have in building a brand.
