The U.S. Open: Golf’s Toughest Test
The 116th United States Open Championship (U.S. Open) kicks off this week for golf’s second major championship of the year. The U.S. Open, long known as the “toughest test in golf,” returns to arguably the toughest golf course in the United States, Oakmont Country Club. While there are few trees on the golf course, it features 210 challenging bunkers, ridiculously thick rough, and lightning fast greens.
Jason Day, Jordan Spieth, and Rory McIlroy, the top three players in the world, figure to be the favorites this week, but one of them winning is not a shoe-in by any means. Dustin Johnson is heading to Oakmont on the heals of back-to-back top-5 finishes, and is hoping to finally win his first major golf championship and expel past golf demons. At last year’s U.S. Open at Chambers Bay, he had an agonizing runner-up finish to Jordan Spieth, where he three-putted the final hole to lose by a single shot. Phil Mickelson, who has finished runner-up at the U.S. Open a record six times, is coming off a second place finish last week at the FedEx St. Jude Classic, and will certainly be a fan favorite this week to pick up his career grand slam of major golf championships (winning The Masters, U.S. Open, British Open, and PGA Championship). Several “under the radar” players who could easily be in contention to win on Sunday are South Africans Branden Grace and Retief Goosen, American Patrick Reed, and Japanese golfer, Hideki Matsuyama.
The U.S Open is a huge draw for golf fans, as they love to see the pros struggle on tough golf courses.
