"The Game"

Nicholas Tice

Rivalry games are one of the many things that make college football so exciting, and this past weekend proved that once again. The atmosphere built around these games comes from students, alumni, and fans coming together to support their teams against interstate or conference rivals. As the Michigan Wolverines and Ohio State Buckeyes took the field last Saturday in Columbus, Ohio, the world’s eyes were glued as ‘The Game” unfolded. In matter of fact, the double-overtime rivalry showdown was the highest rated college football game of the season and recorded approximately 16 million live viewers. Additionally, the game was the first to exceed one million live online streamers via the ESPN app.

No matter the situation, the Ohio State-Michigan game has been a fan favorite in college football. After this year, the rivalry series now holds the top two spots for the highest rated college football games of all time. With such a long history, “The Game” reminds every football fan why the sport is so loved in America.

Social media has allowed the rivalry game to reach new levels of notoriety. Activ8’s own Cory Gregory took his own social media followers behind the scenes of ESPN’s College Gameday, and on the field before kickoff. Among other celebrities making social media headlines on the Ohio State sideline was LeBron James, and the rest of the 2016 National Basketball Association (NBA) champion Cleveland Cavaliers. Videos of Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh breaking his headset and Ohio State scoring the game winning touchdown went viral on Twitter during the game, furthering its exposure. Even with the rich history behind “The Game”, social media has enabled fans to take a more intimate look at what unfolds from the beginning tailgate, to the final play.
