#SagerStrong

The basketball community has been rallying around Craig Sager, a 64 year old sideline reporter known for his unique fashion sense, since after an interview with HBO’s Real Sports last week, Sager revealed that his leukemia has returned after previously being in remission. Given three to six months to live if no treatment is received, Sager says he intends to keep fighting the disease. “Fortunately, I am receiving the best treatment in the world and I remain fully confident I will win this battle.”

As he prepares once again, for cancer treatment, people all around the world have been showing their support. On Twitter, #SagerStrong has been tweeted over twenty thousand times in the last week. Prominent athletes are also tweeting out their messages of support, LeBron James saying, “My prayers goes out to one of the best to ever do it Craig Sager!! Please Stay Strong. #CancerSucks” and Chris Paul, who said, “Our prayers are with you and the family Craig.  #SagerStrong”. Along with words of support from professional basketball players and fans, some are taking on Sager’s famous fashion sense - one that prominently features “loud” clothing. Pictures of supporters donning such standout suits have been posted along with the SagerStrong hashtag. Some Sager fans even go as far as to wear these vibrant suits during games, showing the wide support for Mr. Craig Sager.

Through the amazing communication platform that is social media, there have been countless efforts towards helping Sager other than supportive tweets and pictures, such as close friends and supporters of Craig asking for donations to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. As well, there is a lapel pin for sale featuring Sager and San Antonio Spurs head coach, Gregg Popovich, who is known for his back and forth in-game interviews with Sager. The pins are sold for ten dollars, a share of the sale donated towards cancer research.

Seeing people across the globe come together over an issue through social media, similar to the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, the Activ8Media team understands the importance of social media as a means of communication and interaction. As Craig Sager continues his battle, be sure to look out for #SagerStrong on your timeline, as he keeps fighting, social media provides the platform for players and fans around the world to show their support. #SagerStrong!
