Rickie Fowler: The Golf Industry’s Poster Child

Rickie Fowler: The Golf Industry’s Poster Child

Cale Thompson / Contributor

This week kicks off the 80th playing of the Masters Golf Tournament at the Augusta National Golf Club. The Masters tournament is the first of four major championships each year. It is often dubbed the “Super Bowl of golf” because it is the most sought after tournament for players to reach, part-time fans to watch, and sponsors looking to capitalize on their marketing investments.

If you have paid any attention to the golfing world over the past six years, you have witnessed one of the greatest sports marketing investments of all time in the collaboration of Ricky Fowler with Cobra-Puma Golf (Cobra an American, California based subsidiary of the bigger, German company, Puma). While Rickie has been busy racking up forty-four top tens and three first place finishes in his young career, Cobra-Puma Golf is busy counting the return on their well-spent marketing dollars, especially with the start of the Masters Tournament approaching.

Rickie's laid back and personable demeanor has helped drive Cobra Golf to be one of the most sought after companies for amateur use in the golf industry. You can't see a tour event or watch any golfing event on television without seeing the young golfer and fans clad in his signature Sunday orange (the color of Oklahoma State where he attended) polo shirts, flat-billed hats, and shoes. This is the genius of Cobra-Puma Golf's brand activation strategy. In seeing a young, talented kid who they could market as a stylish, and as a new face-lift for the golf industry, they executed their plan effectively, reaching out to a new generation of golfers and making a name for themselves. Of course, they could not have done so without Rickie's dedication to being a solid role model for young kids to look up to and a tremendous amount of hard work in his craft.

Rickie has an ever-growing social media following with over 1.1 million Twitter followers and another 766 thousand on Instagram. With numbers like those, he is winning just as much as his primary sponsoring company. With the Masters tournament coming up and Rickie Fowler proving to be a top pick for many as underrated young golfer who may just get a chance to dawn the famous trophy of the Masters tournament, his very own green jacket, Cobra-Puma Golf has a lot to look forward to, well deserved from a beautifully executed marketing strategy.

Similar to the way Cobra-Puma Golf developed a branding strategy and sponsorship with Rickie Fowler, Activ8Media provides such services to help clients do the same. Activ8Media is an industry leading digital marketing agency specializing in brand activation, sports marketing, UFC advertising, and social media for businesses, athletes, and entertainers.
