R.I.P. Kimbo Slice

Jake Andrusko / Contributor

Monday morning, professional mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter Kimbo Slice was hospitalized for undisclosed reasons, passing away later that evening. Slice, being one of the most intimidating human beings you’re likely to ever see, was a gentle giant with a huge heart for his family and friends. Kimbo began his career (if you want to call it that) as a “backyard brawler”, making YouTube videos that went viral due to his enormous size and knockout ability. He made his professional MMA debut in November of 2007, knocking out his opponent in just 19 seconds. Kimbo then went on to fight in Bellator MMA, and eventually the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) league after proving himself to the MMA world as a serious fighter. He ultimately posted a 1-1 record in the UFC, and an overall professional record of 5-2, with his last fight resulting in a win at Bellator 149 against Dhafir Harris. Slice was scheduled to headline Bellator 158 this July before his passing.

Humble in his MMA abilities, Kimbo fought to provide for his family, have fun, and promote the sport in which made him who he was. One of his three sons, Kevin Ferguson Jr. recently made his MMA debut in March hoping to carry out his father’s name.
