Pacquiao Punches Out

After over twenty years in the boxing ring, Manny “Pac Man” Pacquiao, officially announced his retirement this past week after a unanimous decision over Timothy Bradley at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. As an eight-division world title holder, Pacquiao retires from the sport as one of the most decorated boxers in history.

Speculation of Pacquiao’s retirement have been circulating for weeks, but the Filipino boxer made it official following the bout when he said, “I have a commitment to my family that I am going to retire after this but I don’t know, maybe I will enjoy being a retired man and helping the people”. Now, the boxing legend will turn his focus to his other profession as Senator to his home country, the Philippines.

The sport of boxing will surely miss the Pac Man considering the rejuvenation he brought to the sport in the 2000s. Pacquiao’s marketing value culminated in the biggest fight in boxing history when he took on Floyd Mayweather, May 2nd of 2015, at the MGM Grand. This mega fight brought in a whopping $600 million dollars and was viewed by over 4.4 million pay-per-view customers. His marketing abilities rival his skills in the ring. In an age that has seen the overall decline of boxing’s popularity in the United States, Pacquiao has made himself a household name through his endorsements - which include everything from Nike and Foot Locker to Nestlé’s Butterfinger and Wonderful Pistachios.

After Pacquiao confirmed his retirement a void was has been created in the boxing world. In the matter of a year, the sport has now lost its two most profitable faces with Floyd Mayweather and now Manny Pacquiao. Although this hurts boxing’s profitability, it also opens the door for new boxers to market themselves in the industries the former super stars were monopolizing. Many young faces are sure to emerge now that the two are officially out of the ring.
