Nike Leaving Golf Club Business

Kyle Allan / Contributor

Nike has been one of the most dominating figures in sports for the past 50 plus years. They became popular in the game of golf in 1996 when they signed Tiger Woods to a major contract when he became a professional in the Professional Golf Association (PGA). Nike knew this would grow their business, and 20 years later Nike has become one of the most recognized brands in the game of golf. They have been making apparel for 20 years now, but only started making golf clubs in 2002. With Tiger’s dominance seeming to have come to an end, their golf equipment success has followed suit and recently seen a steady decline. On Wednesday, August 3rd, Nike announced that they would be exiting the golf equipment industry to focus on golf shoes and apparel only.

To see where Tiger and other Nike athletes go for their golfing equipment will be interesting in the least. Woods’ agent, Mark Steinberg, said they have been looking at other companies already, but would not reveal any names. Tiger Woods used Titleist equipment before 2002 signing a Nike contract that ended his use with Titleist.
