Nike Bids Farewell to Kobe Bryant

Peter Weglarz / Contributor

It’s almost here, basketball star Kobe Bryant’s legendary career comes to a conclusion on Wednesday, April 13th, when he plays the Utah Jazz in the last game of his remarkable 20-year career. While the National Basketball Association (NBA) and fans alike have been celebrating Kobe, the “Black Mamba”, throughout the season, Nike celebrated Bryant in star-studded fashion on Sunday.

The long time Nike athlete, Bryant, was honored in the new “Mamba Day” commercial, featuring some of the best athletes in the world. The likes of LeBron James, Neymar, Russell Wilson and many, many more prominent Nike athletes, talked about the love/hate relationship the sports world has had with Bryant. Women’s basketball star, Elena Delle Donne, summed up the collective thoughts of the bunch saying, “If you’re not cheering for him [Bryant], you’re going to have to hate him because he’s killing your team”.

The commercial allows for the impact Bryant had on sports to be felt. Athletes from all different sports, basketball to golf and tennis, share their feelings. Nike is also calling for all their athletes to honor Bryant by wearing black and gold shoes in whichever sport they play. Rory Mcllroy was the first to do this when he wore black and gold golf shoes during the first round of The Masters golf tournament, last Thursday.

Nike is also enlisting the help of all the fans out there to honor the basketball legend by telling him their last words. Fans can go to the Nike website from their mobile phones and create a a customized poster and post with #MambaDay to commemorate the star. The original Mamba Day tweet from Nike Basketball’s Twitter has gotten over eighteen thousand retweets, continually allowing for the activation of Nike’s celebration of Bryant around the world. Though the Mamba Day campaign comes to an end with Bryant’s career on the 13th, with the enormous impact he’s had on basketball and sports alike, the celebration of all things Kobe will likely continue long after he hangs up his sneakers for good and his playing days are over.
