McGregor Makes History at MSG

Sam Lewey / Contributor

In the first Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) event at Madison Square Garden after mixed martial arts (MMA) was legalized in the state of New York, Conor McGregor had arguably his best performance on the world’s biggest stage, and cemented his place in combat sports history. The 28-year old Irishman thoroughly dominated UFC lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez in a fight that ended with a brutal combination of punches and a second round knockout. In doing so, McGregor became the first fighter in UFC history to simultaneously hold championship belts at two weight classes – the featherweight and lightweight divisions.

McGregor made two significant announcements during his post-fight press conference. He told the media he is expecting his first child this spring, and that he wants an equity stake in the UFC before he fights again. There is no denying Conor generates more revenue for the UFC than any other fighter, and with the UFC’s recent change in ownership, he wants what he believes is his “fair share”. This leads many questions as to when McGregor is going to fight again and who his next opponent will be. A trilogy fight against Nate Diaz could be on the horizon, while another possibility is UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley, who retained his belt on Saturday night with a majority draw over Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson.

Conor McGregor has created a personal brand that is unmatched. Every time he steps in the octagon it seems to grow, and it could pay huge dividends if the UFC answers his wishes for equity in the company.
