McGregor-Diaz Bring Excitement Ahead of UFC 196

Robert Meekins / Contributor

The Conor McGregor show returns on Saturday in the form of UFC 196 in Las Vegas. Per usual for a McGregor bout, this one has considerable buzz and excitement, aided this time by his opponent, Nate Diaz, who has his own brand of trash-talk and brashness.

It’s been nothing but fireworks ever since Diaz was announced as the replacement for Rafael Dos Anjos, who pulled out of what would have been a lightweight title fight against McGregor with an injury.

Last week’s press conference – held in the middle of the day – drew nearly 300,000 live viewers on YouTube. Yes, 300,000 live viewers for a press conference, not on actual television but YouTube, drawing as nearly many eyeballs as a live, high-level boxing match on Showtime on Saturday.

But McGregor simply brings conversation, interest and plenty of hype, no matter how it’s sliced. His Embedded episodes draw millions of viewers on YouTube for each episode, while he’s a social media highlight waiting to happen. His altercation with Diaz at Thursday’s media day took over social media, with it drawing 500,000 views on Instagram, another 300,000 views on Facebook and thousands of retweets on Twitter.

But McGregor has also backed up the loud personality with incredible performances to add to his aura, while Diaz’s own brand of excitement has turned UFC 196 into a must-see event.

Completely overshadowed by the McGregor-Diaz noise is the fact there is a title fight on the card between women’s world bantamweight championship Holly Holm and Miesha Tate. Holm, of course, won the belt with her massive upset victory over Ronda Rousey and looks to make her first title defense, but almost all eyes are on McGregor and Diaz, and for good reason.

The weigh-ins take place today and expect plenty of fireworks and social media highlights before the actual fight even takes place. As for Saturday, the event will dominate social media and will trend at the top of every social platform, once again exemplifying the massive drawing power of Conor McGregor. Another victory would simply make his star even brighter.
