Johnny No More Football?

Johnny No More Football?

Charlie Mitelhaus / Contributor

Arguably no player ever in the history of football has been surrounded by as much controversy as the man known as Johnny Football. Johnny “Football” Manziel found himself in sports headlines again this week as his now ex-agent, Drew Rosenhaus, called it quits with the party animal Manziel. This is also after Cleveland Cavaliers superstar Lebron James dropped Manziel from his marketing firm, LRMR Management, this National Football League (NFL) off-season. The player who seems to be more famous for his off-field antics than his on-field play faces yet another distraction to add to the long laundry list of them already.

An absolute showstopper in his college career with the ability to turn a broken play into an instant highlight, Manziel has not played near to his former esteem in the professional ranks. The even worse fact of the matter is that he seems to be digressing rather than progressing. In College Station, Texas, Manziel will always be a football god and remembered for his incredible performances which garnered him the prestigious Heisman trophy. However, upon being drafted by the Cleveland Browns, his successes have been at a virtual minimum. It is sad to see someone of such athletic dominance and force go from the pinnacle of his playing career to down in the dumps in a matter of months.

Manziel’s numbers in 14 games played professionally has amounted to a measly 1,675 yards through the air, accompanied by seven touchdowns and seven interceptions. These statistics dwarf those of his college days when he passed for 3,706 yards and was accountable for 47 total touchdowns just in his Heisman trophy-winning season of 2012 alone. As a fan of football, despite his cocky attitude and style of play, and leaving out the off-field issues ranging from partying rampant in Las Vegas, to the alleged domestic violence case involving his former girlfriend, one should be rooting for Manziel to get his act together and get back to his old self. The NFL thrives on excitement, and Manziel is just that when playing at his full potential. This upcoming season, if a team decides to roll the dice on Johnny Manziel, they could either collect a rejuvenated and revived Manziel with a new attitude and work ethic inspired by his recent drama, or risk drafting the troublesome NFL signed Johnny Football. For the sake of Manziel and the National Football League, let’s hope it’s not the latter.
