Jason Day Wins Players Championship, Continues Golf Dominance

Sam Lewey / Contributor

Jason Day, number one ranked golfer in the world by the World Golf Rankings, continued his run of dominance by winning the Players Championship by a 4 shot margin. Day started the tournament out fast on Thursday, where his opening round of nine-under 63 tied a course record. On Sunday he shot three-under on the back nine to card a 71 and secure a wire-to-wire victory and his 7th win on the PGA Tour in 17 starts.

The Players Championship is often referred to as the unofficial “fifth major” in golf, drawing the best players in the world. The Professional Golfers’ Association (PGA) Tour’s flagship event features a fierce test of golf. The golf course, TPC Sawgrass, located in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, showcases water on every single hole, and a surplus of bunkers. The infamous “Island Green” par-3, hole 17, can make or break a champion. In 2015, Ricky Fowler birdied the hole three times on Sunday (twice in a playoff) en route to his biggest tournament win of his career. The tournament also has the highest purse of any tournament in golf ($10 million in 2015) and has the most weight towards the world golf rankings outside of the four majors (The Masters, U.S. Open, British Open, and PGA Championship).

Australian Adam Scott called Jason Day’s recent run of dominance “Tiger-esque.” You certainly don’t win seven tournaments in 17 starts by becoming complacent. So how does Jason Day and others stay motivated after finding great success? Cory Gregory touches on the subject in episode 31 of Activ8 Daily.
