Dustin Johnson Breaks Through for First Major Championship Win

Sam Lewey / Contributor

Dustin Johnson can no longer be labeled one of the best players in the world to never win a major golf championship. Johnson dominated the field during golf’s toughest test to win the U.S. Open Championship at Oakmont Country Club by three shots and claimed his first major championship. Rory McIlroy missed the cut, and while other top players in the world, Jordan Spieth and Jason Day faltered, Johnson used his extreme distance and accuracy off the tee box to propel himself to the top of the leaderboard. Republic of Ireland’s Shane Lowry started the final round with a four shot lead over Dustin Johnson, but left the door open after shooting a final round 76 (6 strokes over par). Johnson took full advantage by keeping his cool, despite a strange ruling by the United States Golf Association (USGA) in which Johnson was assessed a one-stroke penalty for moving his ball on the fifth hole, and fired a one stroke under par 69.

Dustin Johnson has now won a Professional Golfers’ Association (PGA) Tour event in each of the past nine seasons. He has been known to start out fast in the first two rounds of major championships, and then falter on the weekend, having been runner-up twice and having finished in the top-five a total of six times. With his win on Sunday, Johnson climbed to the third ranked player in the world according to the world golf rankings, knocking Rory McIlroy out of the top three, and more importantly, finally finishing a major championship strongly.

Even though Dustin Johnson is in his thirties and there are many up-and-coming golfers younger than him, he is arguably the most athletic golfer in the world. Johnson brings an excitement to golf fans with his long hitting that is comparable to the excitement Ricky Fowler draws with his flashy clothes and social media presence. Look for Dustin’s main sponsors, TaylorMade and Adidas, to put even more effort into branding him as the face of their golf lines. As he makes the climb to possibly becoming the number one ranked player in the world, we will most likely see him in multiple new brand campaigns.
