Durant chooses Golden State

Charlie Mitelhaus / Contributor

When most people think of the 4th of July, they think of America, Fireworks and time spent outside by the grill with family and friends. Kevin Durant, however, will forever remember the 4th of July for another reason. On America’s birthday, Oklahoma City Thunder superstar Kevin Durant elected to leave the franchise he had been drafted to and helped build into one of the top teams in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Durant chose to leave Oklahoma City for the same time that eliminated the Thunder out of this year’s playoffs, the Golden State Warriors.

According to ESPN.com’s Marc Stein, “Durant will sign a two-year deal with the Warriors for $54.3 million, league sources report, with a player option for year two.”

The 27-year-old swingman spent his first nine seasons with the Thunder, where he garnered seven NBA All-Star appearances, six All-NBA selections, and the prestigious NBA MVP award in the 2013-2014 season. A player who has been the epitome of the face of a franchise ultimately decided it was in his best interest to take his abilities elsewhere. In this case, to a team already filled to the brim with superstar talent such as: Steph Curry, Draymond Green, and Klay Thompson. With his arrival teams now will have to try and stop not just two splash brothers (Steph and Klay), but now a third in Durant. This three point shooting trifecta will be an absolute treat to watch, as all three players are incredible knock down marksmen from long range.

Without a doubt the Warriors will be the favorites to win the Western Conference again, and quite possibly will be heavily favorited to win the NBA Finals. Even though the NBA season just ended, fans everywhere are already counting down to next season and to see the new look Golden State Warriors.
