DOOM: The Impossible Game?

Since it's debut in 1993, DOOM has been a smash hit for over two decades and has been one of the most recognizable and popular games of all time. The mission of the game to protect Earth from demonic enemies on a Mars moon, Phobos, DOOM was the breakthrough game that set the tone for first-person shooter (fps) games in terms of the immersiveness of the environment and overall game imagery. The impact of the game went beyond effecting gamers at home, with many internet servers overloaded by online players and office building networks being slowed by employees gamming at work. A very controversial game with the amount of blood and gore contained and satanic imagery as well, these qualities earned DOOM one of the first M (Mature) ratings for games from the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB).

The fourth installment of the DOOM series, originally to be called 'DOOM 4' but later stylized to just DOOM, is set to release in just less than two weeks on May 13, 2016. An open beta version of the game was released for 3 days to help work out bugs and also as a form of interactive advertising - getting players hooked, making them want to buy the game when it releases. The new DOOM game is rumored to follow more closely to the first two games in the series, appealing to the more nostalgic gamer.

The DOOM franchise has been a very good at advertising their products. The first game was aided with product placement in popular TV series such as Friends, The Simpsons, and Family Guy. A breakthrough advertisement the game was featured in was when Microsoft's Bill Gates gave a video presentation for Windows 95 while digitally superimposed into the game. The most recent move from the DOOM franchise for advertisement has been the “leaking” features on popular video streaming website YouTube and later shared on Reddit and hence, the rest of the social media world. The “leaking” term in quotes as the video trailer was put up on YouTube and then taken down in what can only be described as record time - how convenient! The features in the video include a sneak peek at a single-player campaign mode, and an allusion to the fact that the game will most likely be played as the character from the original game. The last feature that was introduced that has been generating a great deal of buzz is the release of a difficulty rating named “ultra nightmare,” that has been referred to as impossible, where if the player is to die at any point during the campaign they are sent to the very beginning of the game. “Ultra nightmare” mode has not been beaten by anyone who has played the game yet.
